The Paul Erwin Papers are housed in three boxes and date from 1946 to 1987, although the bulk are from 1946 until 1956. The papers are comprised mainly of course materials from graduate courses taken by Erwin at Northwestern and at Garrett. There are also a few files of teaching materials from courses Erwin taught at Miami University and the University of Cincinnati, consisting of primarily of class notes, student papers, exams, and syllabi. One folder (Box 2 Folder 25) contains correspondence and graduate requirement information relating to Erwin's work at Northwestern. Also included are two history papers from 1967 written by Erwin's son John, a student at Northwestern, and a book Erwin wrote about Ohio history.

For many of his courses, Erwin studied under the prominent historian and author Ray Allen Billington. Erwin's papers include course notes and papers from Billington's classes.
