Records include completed applications for admission to the Dental School, sometimes accompanied by student essay; transcripts documenting students' coursework completed at undergraduate institutions, professional schools and, occasionally, high schools; scores from standardized dental examinations; correspondence; and related materials. The application for admission form typically notes each student's full name; address; birth date; social security number; information relating to parents; name of college, university, or professional school attended along with date of degree; and the names of personal references. Forms for classes graduating through 1977 generally include basic information on students' physical characteristics and personal finances.

Acquisition information

The University Archives acquired this addition to the Dental School student records from Dean Juliann Bluitt, Northwestern University Dental School, on May 3 and 4, 1989 (Accession #89-66).

Description of the addition

This addition to the Dental School student records fills seventy archival boxes and spans the years 1940-1980. The records pertain to candidates for the D.D.S. degree and for the Diploma of Dental Hygiene. Records relating to D.D.S. candidates are arranged alphabetically according to their surname. Records relating to the Diploma for Dental Hygiene candidates are located at the end of the addition (starting with box 112) and are arranged a alphabetically according to the candidates' surname as well. Each student file typically contains: a completed application for admission to the Dental School; copies of transcripts from the Dental School, and in many cases, undergraduate institutions and secondary schools; reports concerning results of standard dental school admission examinations; letters of recommendation; official forms such as diploma releases and transcript requests; correspondence and other related material. The applications for admission often have a photograph attached. Applications through 1972 generally contain information about the applicant's parents, financial assets, and extracurricular activities; many files contain a short essay.
