Scope and Contents

This addition to the Records of the Department of Political Science fills two and one half boxes and primarily concerns administrative aspects of the Political Science department from 1948 to 1985, with the majority of the documents dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Following the arrangement of the materials in the original series (boxes 1–33), folders in the Addition are arranged alphabetically by subject. Within the folders, materials are arranged chronologically.

An incomplete run of Annual Reports, dating between 1948 and 1983, include a small amount of correspondence pertaining to the annual reports present also. Documents pertaining to the Department's annual budget date from 1963 to 1976.

Other recurring departmental matters addressed by memos, reports, and correspondence in the Addition include the selection of new Department Chairs, the awarding of specialization certificates to Political Science undergraduates, and the planning of the Evening Division and Summer Sessions schedules. Issues related to faculty include selection,, salaries, promotions, teaching loads, and summer research grants. General Correspondence consists of letters–addressed to the Department Chair and other members of the Department–and related material, dating between 1961 and 1979. Another correspondence folder is devoted to correspondence dealing with Promotion and Reappointment committees during the years 1974–1977 and 1981–1982. A folder with the revealing title “Department Crisis” documents the need for the reorganization and the refocusing of the department in 1984. Faculty Effort Reports and their related correspondence date from 1980 to 1985; these were superseded by Personnel Activity Reports Effort Reports because of a change in US government policy related to obtaining federal money.

Records relating to the organization and implementation of graduate programs in the Political Science Department deal with the decision to implement a terminal Masters program in addition to the PhD program in the mid-1970s to the early 1980s. One folder consists of committee decisions related to the hire Robert Johansen as a professor. The Addition also includes make-up examinations and make-up exam permission forms from 1978 to 1983. One folder that differs from the mainly administrative content of this addition relates to the founding and organization of the Political Science Club from 1964 to 1966.

Acquisition information

The additions to the Records of the Political Science Department were transferred to the University Archives as Accession Number 82-1 (December 7, 1981), 87-7 (January 8, 1987), and 87-48 (March 16, 1987).

Separated materials

Approximately 1–1/2 inches of duplicate and extraneous materials were discarded.
