Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The R. Barry Farrell Papers fill sixteen boxes, spanning the period 1947-1992. Most of the material dates from 1960 to 1985. The papers are organized in six main categories: biographical materials, correspondence, teaching files, research files, trip files, and publications, with small amounts under the headings of papers presented before professional organizations, speeches, and education files.

Farrell's office arrangement of the papers makes it necessary for users to be aware that although a given person may have a separate subject correspondence folder, additional correspondence with that individual may be found in the appropriate chronological portions of the general correspondence.

The biographical materials include curricula vitae and clippings on his appearances and his views of contemporary topics. In Box 1 Folder 2 are found a translation of an attack on Farrell in Prague's Rude Pravo Jan. 9, 1971) and Farrell's response. In Box 1 Folder 8 is the Hungarian original and an English translation of an interview with Farrell at Budapest in 1964.

The correspondence files consist primarily of material related to academic matters, meetings here and abroad, and to the obtaining of information and speakers. A popular teacher, Farrell wrote many recommendations for his students.

The teaching files contain course descriptions, registration and grade lists, and applications for the undergraduate research courses.

The research files include correspondence pertinent to Farrell's interests in the U.S. and overseas, grant proposals and reports, and his interviews of political, academic and other individuals in Eastern Europe in 1960 (Box 13, Folders 13 and 14).

The trip files contain correspondence, notes, and itineraries.

The publications category is made up primarily of correspondence with scattered drafts of portions of books. Of special interest are several newspaper articles (Box 15, Folders 20-22; Box 16, Folders 1-2) containing Farrell's views of contemporary political problems and trends.

Just after the processing of the initial accessions of the Farrell Papers had been completed, the University Archives received an additional twenty-seven boxes, spanning the period 1957-1985. See the container list for additional information about the addition.

Within each category the files are arranged alphabetically by folder title and chronologically within each folder unless stated otherwise.

The biographical materials include appointment calendars for 1974-1979. The correspondence consists primarily of letters to and from Farrell relating to academic matters, trips, and publications. The teaching files contain course descriptions, exams, and registration and grade lists. The publications category includes partial drafts (of books), drafts (of articles), and correspondence.

Addition, Box 17-23 Just after the processing of the initial accessions of the Farrell Papers had been completed, the University Archives received an additional twenty-seven boxes, spanning the period 1957-1985.

Most of the material in the addition, comprising boxes 17 – 23, dates between 1960 and 1980. The addition is organized in four main categories: biographical material, correspondence, teaching files, and publications, with small amounts under additional headings. The most important of the latter (research files-Eastern Europe) contains a substantial amount of original notes and typed reports of Farrell's interviews in Eastern Europe in 1960 (Box 22, Folders 11-12). These form a valuable extension of the material in Box 13, Folders 13-14 in the original accession.
