Scope and Contents

Original donation: boxes 1-14

These records comprise the administrative files of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Simeon E. Leland, from 1946 to 1966. Although the records span the entire term of Leland's deanship, the bulk falls in the years after 1960, particularly from 1962 to 1966. There are gaps in the records, especially in regard to correspondence for the years prior to 1960.

The records are organized in four general categories: Administrative Files; Faculty and Staff Files; Committees, Curriculum, Foundations and Grants Files; and Departmental Files.

The Aministrative Files reflect the broad administrative duties of the Dean. They include correspondence with University administrators; Annual Reports of the Dean; College budgets and related fiscal records; and correspondence pertaining to other University schools and departments.

The Faculty and Staff Files include a variety of general administrative records concerning faculty meetings; terms of service, faculty contracts, leaves of absence, promotions, and resignations; and additions to the College staff.

The Committees, Curriculum, Foundations and Grants Files contain correspondence and related materials concerning various College committees; foundations; grants; funded programs; and curricular studies and revisions.

The Departmental Files, which comprise the core of this series, include form letters to departmental chairmen, reports of departmental chairmen to the Dean, and tabulations of faculty publications by department and faculty member. Most importantly, the files contain correspondence with departmental chairmen and other faculty members concerning administrative matters including faculty appointments, promotions, recommendations, and curricular changes.

Addition, December 1980

Three folders of records and correspondence separated from the records of Dean Robert H. Strotz have been added to this collection. These folders have been placed at the end of Box 5 (folders 29-31).
