Scope and Contents

This collection consists of one Lowe & Campbell Official Basketball Score Book, used to document the contests of Northwestern University’s men’s basketball team from December 8, 1941 through March 6, 1943. Statistical accounts of both home and away games are recorded in the book. Information recorded in the score book include dates and venues for games, names of opposing teams, names of players from both Northwestern and opposing teams, jersey numbers worn by players, players’ positions, halftime and final scores. Also recorded are accountings of goals scored by each player by game quarter, fouls incurred by each player, and final tallies – by player – of field goals, free throws, fouls, and total points. Recorded as well are names of teams’ coaches, of score keepers, and of game timers.

Northwestern’s basketball players during this era included: George Benson, Arnold Chalberg, Hank Clayson, Don Clawson, Dick Dixon, Charles Duryea, Ted Esser, George Felt, Otto Graham, Bud Hasse, Harold Hudson, Bob Jake, Stan Jensen, Harvey Jenson, John Kelly, Til Kreiling, Don Kruger, Don Kucukas, Del Riessen, Ron Schumacher, Jules Siegle, George Theodoras, Frank Thulstrup, Marty Tuntland, Ray Vincent, Nick Vodick, and Russ Wendland.

Of particular note among those players is Otto Graham, Northwestern’s most accomplished athlete, recognized for his skill by being named an All-American basketball player in 1944. After leaving Northwestern and completing military service during World War II, Graham played professional basketball in 1945-1946 for the National Basketball League champion Rochester Royals. Graham, also an All-American in football at Northwestern, later became, with the Cleveland Browns, one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in the history of professional football. He is an inductee of both the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame.
