Scope and Contents

The George A. Beauchamp Papers include materials created by George A. Beauchamp related to his work in education curriculum development, particularly in Illinois. The collection is arranged into five boxes and includes materials from 1940 to 1992.

Series 1. Articles, Papers, Communication, 1954-1982, contains papers, articles and research by Beauchamp on a variety of topics related to curriculum development in education. This series also includes correspondence and tributes dedicated to him by peers.

Series 2. Papers on Curriculum Engineering I-VII, 1972-1976, contains each of Beauchamp’s seven-part series on curriculum engineering, ranging in topics such as the effects of the installation of a curriculum engineering system to reflections on comparative study of curriculum engineering. Many of these papers were written in collaboration with Patricia C. Conran, a former student of Beauchamp’s.

Series 3. Curriculum Theory, 4th Edition (Original Draft), 1975, includes materials from Beauchamp’s 4th edition of his book, Curriculum Theory which reviews research regarding curriculum engineering. This is the original draft copy of the book and includes annotations and mark ups throughout.

Series 4. Curriculum Theory, 4th Edition (Copy of Draft), 1975, includes a copy of the original draft of Beauchamp’s Curriculum Theory.

Series 5. General, 1963-1992, includes a finding aid for Beauchamp’s papers from The Museum of Education, a manual for the Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaire made by Ralph M. Stogdill, and the Northwestern University Resolution of Appreciation awarded to Beauchamp in 1977.

Series 6: Publications, 1940-1987, includes 19 of Beauchamp’s publications, including his Master’s and PhD thesis, editions of Curriculum Theory in other languages, and works featuring Beauchamp’s writing.

Biographical / Historical

George A. Beauchamp (1912-1992) received his Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Michigan University in 1934. He then worked at Bloomfield Village Elementary School in Birmingham, Michigan, first as a teacher and later as principal. After earning a Master of Education in 1940 at Wayne State University, Beauchamp worked as a communications officer for the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1942 to 1945 and as an administrative officer at the U.S. Veterans Administration in Detroit until 1950. This same year, Beauchamp graduated from the University of Michigan with a Doctorate in Philosophy. He then joined University Elementary School as an associate professor of education and principal until 1952. He transferred to Northwestern University as a professor of education from 1952 until his retirement in the early 1980s.

The George A. Beauchamp Papers include materials created by George A. Beauchamp related to his work in education curriculum development, particularly in Illinois. The collection is arranged into five boxes and includes materials from 1940 to 1992. It consists of over 80 folders of Beauchamp’s writings and research revolving around curriculum, such as journal articles, remarks from conferences, and other works published during his career.
