Scope and Contents

The records are arranged alphabetically by folder title and then chronologically within each folder. The bulk of the records are comprised of administrative material such as applications for positions and related correspondence, budget requests and records, correspondence concerning programs and meeting, and public relations materials. Also included in the records are correspondence about visitors to the Center and requests from individuals and institutions for advice and assistance in establishing or evaluating projects and programs. The records also include a number of the Center's proposals to granting bodies for financial support.

Of special importance are the Center's annual reports to the Kellogg Foundation (1969-1975), the Final Reports to the Danforth Foundation (1979) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (1973), and the detailed records pertaining to the Learning Resources Facility and The Writing Place. The Center's records also document some of its programs within Northwestern and with other colleges and universities such as Stanford University.

Abstract

The Center for the Teaching Professions was established on September 1, 1969 under the administrative direction of Northwestern University's School of Education. The Center's purpose was to focus “its resources and energies on the problem of teaching within Northwestern University and in other educational contexts to provide both pre-service and in-service support for the development of more effective strategies for creative teaching and curriculum reform in all professions. The bulk of the records are comprised of administrative material such as applications for positions and related correspondence, budget requests and records, correspondence concerning programs and meeting, and public relations materials. Also included in the records are correspondence about visitors to the Center and requests from individuals and institutions for advice and assistance in establishing or evaluating projects and programs.

Method of Acquisition

The Center for the Teaching Professions Records were separated from the B. Claude Mathis Papers (Series 14/18), which were donated to the University Archives on September 10, 1990 as Accession #90-142. Materials given new accession number #94-13.
