Guide to the Alpha Epsilon Phi (Omicron Chapter) Records

 Collection
Identifier: 31/6/12
This series consists of three and one-half boxes and five oversized scrapbooks containing mainly photographs but also including clippings, ephemera, and some correspondence pertaining to the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority. These materials span the years from 1929 to 1968 but are scattered and mainly represent the chapter's membership, house activities, and social events during the 1950s and 1960s.

All records of this series had been contained originally within scrapbooks but most of these have been disassembled for purposes of preservation. Materials from separate scrapbooks have been neither combined nor interfiled. Photographs, when possible, have been identified and foldered apart from clippings and other print or paper materials. Photographs, clippings, and other related materials, when dated, are arranged chronologically within their folders. Scrapbooks that could not be disassembled without damage to their contents have not been altered significantly.

Abstract

On April 2, 1921, Northwestern opened the Omicron chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi, making Northwestern the first Midwest outpost of the sorority.

Method of Acquisition

These records were donated to the University Archives by Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority on September 17, 1981 (Accession #81-220).

Separated Materials

About one linear inch of official University publications including programs from Homecoming events, the Waa-Mu show, and May Week as well as scattered editions of Alpha Epsilon Phi's Omicronicle and Omicron Omnibus have been removed to the University Archives General Reference Files. One oversized poster dated October 21, 1960 has been removed to the Poster Collection. One 1965-1966 composite photograph has been removed to the Oversize Photograph Collection (OSP#698). Covers from two disassembled scrapbooks have been retained as artifacts and removed to the Artifacts Collection.
