Scope and Contents

The Hans Egon Holthusen papers are contained in one box, and date from 1939 to 1982.

The biographical file includes Northwestern University Faculty biographical records, curriculum vitae supplements, and a greeting card for Holthusen's 70th birthday (Box 1, Folder 1). Items within folder are arranged chronologically.

The correspondence files include copies of letters from distinguished European authors, poets, and philosophers, dating between 1939 and 1982 (Box 1, Folder 2-39). Items within each folder are arranged chronologically.

The manuscript files contain typescript drafts of two published books: Chicago, Metropolis am Michigansee, and Eduard Mörike in Selbstzeugnissen und Bilddokumenten (Box 1, Folder 40-41). Items within each folder are arranged chronologically.

Folders 42 through 44 include offprints of Holthusen's scholarly articles and several of his published texts, the short publications files contain published material between 1955 and 1974. Items within each folder are arranged chronologically.

Abstract

German poet and literary critic Hans Egon Holthusen taught German Language and Literature at Northwesern University from 1968-1981. His papers contain offprints, manuscripts, publications, and correspondence (copies), which Holthusen received from distinguished European authors, poets, and philosophers.

Arrangement

The Hans Egon Holthusen papers are organized into biographical; correspondence (arranged by surname of correspondent); manuscripts (arranged by title); and offprints and short publications.

Method of Acquisition

The Hans Egon Holthusen Papers were donated to the Northwestern University Archives by Hans Egon Holthusen on April 8, 1983 (Accession No. 83-31). Materials from the University Archives' Faculty Biographical Files were incorporated into this series.

Separated Materials

Approximately one inch of duplicate material was discarded, 15 books were separated from the Hans Egon Holthusen Papers and transferred to the Northwestern University Library.
