Records of the Vice President for Development Office of Special Events
Scope and Contents
This series, comprising thirty-three boxes, includes General Files and Subject Files maintained by the Manager of Development Special Events, which span the period from 1958 to 1980. The bulk of the records pertain to events after 1972. The original order was maintained for the most part.
The General Files, comprising one and a half boxes, are general reference files including material used on an ongoing basis by personnel in planning university events. Included are folders pertaining to the history of Northwestern University, student life, dedications, groundbreakings and athletic events, as well as sample invitations and cards. The files are arranged alphabetically by folder title.
The remainder of the series is comprised of Subject Files pertaining to specific special events, such as groundbreakings, dedications, dinners and receptions organized by the department. Major events include the James Roscoe Miller Campus Dedication, First Plan of the Seventies, New Library Dedication, President's football entertaining and Dr. Miller's Retirement Dinner. The files include programs, arrangements, invitation lists, correspondence, budgets and news clippings dealing with each event. The folders include materials used in the planning and follow-up, as well as the staging of the event itself. The files are arranged chronologically by the date each event took place.

Method of Acquisition
The Records of the Office of Special Events were transferred to the University Archives on May 26, 1981 and January 5, 1984 as Accessions 81-109 and 84-5 by Geraldine Beisang, Manager of Development Special Events. One accession comprising two boxes was transferred to the Archives prior to 1974.
