"Will you be kind enough to return the reticule to Miss Patterson and to tell her that I am sorry to have kept it by mistake and beg her pardon. As you are aware I saw her alone this morning and she spoke to me. Believe me that never in my life I fought such a hard struggle against my own passion and love - I had to be harsh and rude to her, for not showing her that I love her as much as ever and for not being overwhelmed by the sweetness of her voice and presdence."
