Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection contains papers selected from the business manager files of the Chicago Tribune, dating mostly from 1926 to 1955, though a small portion of the material dates from as early as 1921 and as late as 1960. Most of the correspondence is that of two business managers, Wilbert E. Macfarlane (1928-1944) and Elbert M. Antrim (1944-1954).

Boxes 1-5 include files and correspondence related to R.R. McCormick's activities as director and meetings of the Associated Press and American Newspaper Publishers Association, as well as general administration reports (1924-1955). Boxes 6-7 include materials on Tribune buildings and properties, subsidiaries and personnel (1926-1956). Boxes 8-14 include the files of the Advertising, Circulation, Legal, Promotion, and Editorial Departments (1926-1958). Files related to WGN are contained in boxes 15-21 (1926-1959), and the Mutual Broadcasting System in boxes 22-34 (1933-1955). (In addition to heading the Tribune's business department, Macfarlane was managing director of WGN for many years, and president of the Mutual Broadcasting System from its inception in 1934 until 1942.)
