From the Collection:

This collection consists of promotional materials sent by the Chicago Tribune to distributors, newsdealers and carriers from 1921 to 1939. The collection consists primarily of:

  • Mimeographed letters and notices to dealers announcing upcoming national and local events and special features in the paper which it was throught would stimulate newspaper sales. With each of these came a return postcard to facilitate ordering extra copies of the newspaper
  • Posters, circulars, and leaflets advertising Blue Ribbon Fiction, contests, special rotogravure pictures and portraits, and the like, including accident and life insurance offers
  • Proofs and copies of Tribune advertisements for upcoming contests, features, and articles
  • A special series of daily advertising posters called "Last Minute Photos," 1924-09-02 1925-02-13 (plus some undated posters of the same era), and 1925-12-03 to 1926-07-12. These carried the message that the Tribune contained "the news of the world in pictures"
  • Copies of pages of the Tribune announcing "high water marks" in circulation figures
  • Similar and substantial promotional material for Liberty Magazine for the years 1924 and 1925


The collection also contains: a bound volume of pertinent pages of the Chicago Herald and Examiner, for 1921-1922.
