Biographical / Historical

The Iwakura Mission was a Japanese diplomatic effort intended to gain recognition for the reinstated Meiji dynasty; to renegotiate treaties, and to study Western systems and structures. The signatories of this letter were the leaders of the delegation (in modern transcription): Iwakura Tomomi, Kido Takayoshi, Okubo Toshimichi, Ito Hirobumi, and Yamaguchi Masuka.
