Scope and Contents

Enclosed is a manuscript dated 1866-07-17, headed "Union League of America", with text beginning "Brothers of the U.L.A. in Illinois: There is work before us." The text includes "The enemies of freedom, of human rights, of the elevation of the laboring classes, are on the alert and by the aid, comfort and co-operation of men high in authority are confidently preparing to overthrow the Union Republican Party and to establish upon its ruins an aristocracy and a despotism this country has never yet experienced."
