Overview

Edoardo Sanguineti (1930-2010) taught at various Italian universites after receiving his doctorate at the University of Turin. He published poetry, novels, opera libretti, and critical essays on Dante, twentieth-century authors and literary movements. During his formative years he wrote this collection of some one hundred letters to fellow Italian Gianna Sommi before she moved to the United States to study at Cornell University on a Fulbright scholarship in 1957. All the letters written between 1946 and 1954, as well as the two letters in 1964 and 1967, are in Italian.

Biographical / Historical

Edoardo Sanguineti (1930-2010) was born in Geonoa, Italy. Study for his Ph.D. at the University of Turin included a thesis on Dante which was published as Interpretazione di Malebolge (1961). He taught at various Italian universities, including those in Turin and Salerno, and published poetry, novels, opera libretti, and critical essays on Dante, twentieth-century authors and literary movements. As a member of the Italian avant-garde movement, he belonged to “Gruppo ‘63” and “i novissimi.” He also served as a representative in the Italian Parliament from 1979 to 1983. His political consciousness is revealed in his writing as much as his poetic surrealism. Northwestern University Library holds many of his published works, and titles and call numbers can be found in the online catalog.
