"Doodle" appears to be an affectionate nickname used both by Richard's brother Ernest in writing to his wife (Richard's sister-in-law) Adele Fies Loeb, and in this case by Richard to a woman with whom he had a romantic involvement (suggested by another letter to be Helen C. Wollenberger).
