Northwestern University Dental School Film Collection
Scope and Contents
This is an artificial collection of 6 films created by or collected by Northwestern University Dental School, spanning the years 1929 to circa 1947. It includes both unedited footage and produced films that relate to the cultural and institutional history of the dental school. Dental education films are part of the Medical Motion Pictures Collection.
Three of the films depict annual golf outings hosted by the dental school's Alumni Association, from 1934-1936. The film Golden Anniversary of Northwestern University Dental School includes the 1937 golf outing in addition to ceremonies celebrating the school's 50th anniversary.
The other two films include unproduced footage taken by dental student Sheridan C. Waite ([Moving Pictures of Northwestern Dental School]) and research fellow Carlos E. Pomés ([Northwestern University Dental Library]). Waite's film includes footage of dental surgery as well as scenes of the Chicago campus and surrounding area, while Pomés's film shows the interior of the dental school's library.

Physical Location
This collection is stored off-site, and the items are housed with the Medical Motion Pictures Collection, the Northwestern University Medical School Film Collection, and the Northwestern University Medical School Audio Collection.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
There is no documentation about the collection or its transfer. In 1996, Galter Health Sciences Library was formed by the merger of the medical school and dental school libraries. It is presumed that Galter Library came into possession of the films at that time, or in 2001 when the dental school closed.

Processing Information
The digitization of this collection was supported by a Recordings at Risk grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The grant program is made possible by funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The collection was digitized in 2021 by The MediaPreserve. All films were rehoused in archival film cans and transferred from original metal reels to archival cores when possible. The original canisters have been retained and stored separately from the films. Reels were discarded. Each record indicates the physical location of both the film itself and its original canister.
