Content Description

Professional papers of Irving S. Cutter, MD, (1875-1945) Dean of Northwestern University Medical School from 1925 to 1941. Half of the collection is research from 1933 into the state of American medical libraries at the time, including questionnaires sent out by Cutter to librarians across the country and their responses on the forms and in letters. The rest of the collection consists of Cutter's writings, including a draft of his chapter on the history of midwifery from Obstetrics and Gynecology, edited by A.H. Curtis; a series of articles called "Landmarks in Surgical Progress;" and other shorter essays; pages from scrapbooks kept by Cutter (holiday cards from the medical faculty of Northwestern in the 1930s) and by Dr. H. Winnett Orr (materials related to Cutter's life and death); correspondence related to his chapter on the history of midwifery and related to his membership in the satirical organization the American College of Dog Surgeons; a commemorative hand-illuminated book presented to Cutter in 1941 by the medical faculty of Northwestern; and three wooden cabinets of lantern slides of pictures related to the history of medicine.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Many items were the gift of Irving S. Cutter and were accessioned into the collection in October 1939, May 1944, July 1944, and June 1955. A Beaumont family genealogical chart, prepared by Arno Luckhardt, was purchased from Mrs. Irving S. Cutter in June 1945.

Condition Description

Items have expected wear from age including dirty and brittle paper.
