Biography

John Edwin Giles (1949-1996) was a composer, vocalist, and music educator based in Evanston, Illinois. He received both bachelor's and master's degrees in music from the University of Illinois and later earned a Ph.D. in in Musicology from the University of Michigan and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Voice from Northwestern University.

He wrote more than 125 songs, 50 choral pieces, 8 cantatas and a viola sonata. He was in the chorus for the Lyric Opera for 12 years and served for 15 years as a lay minister of music at the Unitarian Church of Evanston. Giles also recorded an album of his songs released by Sunshine Productions on compact disc titled, "Songs for All Seasons.”
