General

Initiation is one of the most important traditions among the Krobos in Ghana. The ceremony marks the ability of young girls to get married. On this occasion, the girls, about 17 years of age, are dressed in gorgeous dresses that will appeal to the young men and hasten them to propose marriage. The leather signifies the importance of the ancestor in the family. The gold tacks show the wealth of the family. The red symbols explain the need for the blessing of the spirits, and the faith and love that should prevail at all times between husband and wife.
