General

This is the old harbor area of Mombasa where there are many of the old Arab sections. Mombasa was the major city for the Arabs, for they could control the inlands from here. While they had only a foothold on the coast, they controlled the commercial activity between the interior and the rest of the world. The capital for the Arabs in this area was Zanzibar, but major commercial transactions took place in Mombasa. It is now too shallow for big ships to come in, but the dhows still come into the old port area.
