General

The ruins are 65 miles from Mombasa on the Malindi road. They date back to the 15th century when Gedi was a flourishing Arab-African town, typical of a number of such towns on the east African coast. Gedi was abandoned in the early 17th century. It may have been destroyed by a Mombasa punitive expedition against Malindi, but rebuilt. It was finally abandoned in the face of the advancing nomadic Galla people from Somalia.
