General
The base of the structure is made from a clay-coated tree trunk to which a bamboo pole (with a rope holding a calabash) is tied. The calabash is used to get water from the river. The man fills the calabash and pours the water into a ditch which leads into his fields. This form of irrigation is used all over northern Nigeria. Also, the weight from the mud on the end of the stick makes it much easier to pull the water out
