General

The island is situated in the bay about 3 miles east of the mainland. It is fairly small island, half of it low-lying, half a cliff. This part has been used as a fortress for many centuries. Often in its history, the fortress has changed hands among the major European powers fighting for position in West Africa. It played a role in the slave trade of the 19th century. The boat goes back and forth between the island and Dakar, until late at night. Goree is pleasant place to visit. It has a good climate, being surrounded by the sea.
