Department of University Relations Photographic Proof Sheets

This collection, spanning the period from January, 1973 through June, 1976, consists primarily of proof sheets of photographs taken for use by Northwestern's Department of University Relations. Also included in the collection is a card index to subjects and events represented by the photographs. The proof sheets are indexed both chronologically and by subject headings. Index descriptors refer to a unique eleven-digit numerical identifier marked on the reverse of each sheet. The first four digits of the identifier represent the year and month during which the pictured subjects were photographed. For example, numbers beginning "7301" identify photographs taken during January, 1973; numbers beginning "7409" identify photographs taken during September, 1974. The last four digits of the indicator are sequential sheet numbers used to distinguish individual sheets within a given month.

The photographs, taken by a number of individuals employed by or under contract to the Department of University Relations, are largely of university administrators, faculty, students, and benefactors, buildings, and campus events. The sheets are mainly black and white and, and measure 8" x 10". The University Archives holds few of the negatives corresponding to the sheets.
