Records of the General Faculty Committee
Scope and Contents
The records of the General Faculty Committee (GFC) includes materials generated or received by the committee between 1939-1977. The records are divided into three categories, General Administrative Records, Administrative Subject Files, and records pertaining to GFC Committees. The original folder titles have been retained. Materials relating to other faculty committees and the University Senate which was not directly related to the GFC, was removed and filed with other appropriate series.
The General Administrative Records include a comprehensive account of the origins of the GFC and two five-year progress reports covering the first ten years of the committee's existence. The GFC Annual Reports and the GFC Report provide a comprehensive account of the committee's activities on a yearly basis. Included in the reports are preliminary drafts of reports, subcommittee reports and reports of other faculty committees. The Agenda and Meeting Notices and Minutes are not complete for every year and are missing entirely for the years 1939-1958.
Although the bulk of the remainder of the records date from the late 1960's and 1970's, a few miscellaneous items from the 1940's are included. Most of the Correspondence is of a rather general nature. Correspondence pertaining to a specific subject may often be found in the appropriate subject folders. The Membership materials pertain to the GFC, except the folders entitled "Committee Appointments" which pertain to other faculty committees as well as GFC committees.
The Administrative Subject Files and the Committees materials are closely related since GFC subcommittees often generate materials relating to these specific subjects. Included is correspondence, reports and drafts memoranda, notes and lists.

Language of Materials
On April 8, 1939 it was recommended that a standing committee be created to represent the several faculties and Senate before the Board. Further, it recommended that the committee be democratically elected from the four upper academic ranks of the faculty, that its first task would be to consider the revised statutes and that it should be called the General Faculty Committee. The General Faculty Committee was then authorized by the Senate "to consider any matters of general university policy on its own initiative or matters referred to it by faculty of the separate schools…" The records of the General Faculty Committee (GFC) includes materials generated or received by the committee between 1939-1977.
The records are divided into three categories, General Administrative Records, Administrative Subject Files, and records pertaining to GFC Committees. The original folder titles have been retained. Within each series, folders are arranged chronologically.
Method of Acquisition
The records of the General Faculty Committee were transferred to the University Archives by Evan H. Greener (Chairman 1976-1977), July 1977.
Two folders of GFC Reports (Box 1 Folder 7 and Box 7 Folder 10) were separated from Series 4/5/1 and added to the Serial Publications Collection. (Thomas J. Dorst, March 15, 1984.)
