Scope and Contents

The papers of Lawrence Dumas contain biographical materials, teaching files, professional files, departmental files, publications, and photographic transparencies.

Biographical materials (one folder) span the years 1971 through 2008 and contain faculty biographical records, curriculum vitae, clippings, and funeral eulogies from family and faculty. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order according to topical headings.

Teaching files (fifty-two boxes) contain mainly lecture notes, exam questions and answers, student exams and grades, letters of recommendation, experiments performed by Dumas and members of his laboratory team, and laboratory notebooks. This subseries spans the years 1953 to 1997.

Professional files (two boxes) contain correspondence, grant applications, and laboratory order notebooks. This subseries span the years 1973 through 1994.

Departmental files (two boxes) span the years 1970 to 1991.This subseries contains mainly materials on the Life Science campaign and the Searle Leadership Fund, minutes of the Department of Biological Sciences as well as summaries of account expenditures at the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Cell Biology.

The publications subseries (one box) contains articles and reprints from Dumas and his laboratory members from the years 1970 to 1991.

Abstract

Lawrence Dumas became assistant professor in the Biological Science Department at Northwestern University in 1970, was appointed associate professor in 1975, and full professor in 1980. Dumas also served as chair of the department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Cell Biology, and as dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, before becoming University Provost. This collection of his papers fills 58 boxes and spans the years from 1953 it 2008. It contains biographical materials, teaching, professional and departmental files, and publications.
